Corona virus and Water venues

Corona virus and Aquatic venues

Up till now, there is no evidence that corona virus COVID-19 can be transmitted through swimming pools, hot tubs, water playgrounds and beaches.
This virus is transmitted from one person to the other through respiratory droplets released when a person sneezes, talks or coughs. It can be also transmitted from a contaminated surface when someone touches it and then to the nose, mouth or eyes.

Public water venues can be operated by:
• Membership clubs (for example, gyms)
• Schools
• Universities
• Waterparks
• Homeowners’ associations

However, many considerations must be taken for the safety of individuals inside these aquatic venues. Those considerations are stated down below.

Limited Number
1) Allow limited number per area to encourage social distancing. Stay at least 6 feet away, both in and out of the water, from people you don’t live with.

Educate the staff
2) Encourage all the staff, members, swimmers to wear masks, wash their hands for at least 20 seconds, use sanitizers that contain at least 60% alcohol.

Social education

3) Encourage individuals to cover their mouth and nose while sneezing with a sanitized tissue.

4) Face masks shouldn’t be worn in water. Once they get wet they lose their privilege to protect against viruses. In addition, wet masks are also difficult to breath through.

5) Educate the staff and members to stay at home when they feel sick. If they experience any symptom including fever, runny nose, sneezing, headache …etc. They must stay at home for at least 14 days.

Disinfect regularly
6) Always use disinfectants to sanitize and clean swimming pools and playgrounds regularly. It is recommend to disinfect them twice daily.
In addition cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces like chairs, tables, slides, door handles, restrooms, pool noodles and lounge chairs.

7) Ensure that hygiene supplies are always available. These supplies are hand wash, soap, alcohol with at least 60% in volume, paper towels, tissues, no touch trash canes, no touch water tapes, no touch tissue dispensers…etc

8) Use signs and signals all over the area to remind people of how dangerous corona virus is and to encourage them to apply social distancing and wash their hands.

9) Ventilation is highly crucial. Therefore, make sure that indoor ventilation is working properly.

Be well-prepared
10) Last but not least, prepare properly when someone gets sick.
Isolate those who are sick and transport them to their homes or a healthcare facility.

11) Close off areas which are used by sick individuals. Disinfect these areas and make sure to wait for 24 hours before disinfecting them.
